A.O.D.A. BRAILLE AND TACTILE
The Ontario government has introduced proposed standards relating to the built environment in its efforts to make
facilities accessible to everyone regardless of their disability. The built environment includes all public and private sector buildings including all features that would impede persons with disabilities from fully accessing or using the building, it’s facilities or circulating within it.
Signage is an important element to help all people safely navigate a building or its surroundings. When properly designed and installed it can significantly reduce barriers and make a facility safer to all who use them. Under the proposed legislation, tactile, braille and audible signs will be required to identify permanent rooms, lockers, directional signs, information signs, regulatory and safety signs, washrooms, entrances, exits, elevators and be accompanied with a pictogram consistent with international standards. These signs also have strict design parameters regulating the size, contrast, style of text and placement.
